For most cases, but not all*, a standard $60 Diagnostic Charge is due for each computer dropped off with Mac Nurse for service.
When a computer is dropped for service, repairs, or upgrades, the initial diagnostic charge includes the following five services:
1. One 30-minute appointment when you drop off your computer. This appointment allows for 30-minutes of information gathering for things we’ll need, like your passwords, assistance in filling out the Mac Nurse Intake Form, and a brief conversation about how our repair process works.
2. A full diagnosis of each unique computer’s software and hardware. This typically takes 24-72 hours from the time of initial drop-off.
3. An itemized Diagnostic report and Estimate for necessary and/or recommended repairs and upgrades.
4. A professional Tune-Up of your computer’s OS + Hard Drive - if your HD is functional. (Malware, if present, must be removed prior to HD Tune-Up).
5. One (non-mandatory but oftentimes strongly encouraged) 30-minute “post-op” consultation with Mac Nurse when you come to pickup your repaired computer. This is available when/if proposed repairs and services were approved, performed, and implemented. This post-service consultation is not included for customers who have rejected the work Mac Nurse proposed in their original Estimate.
*The Diagnostic Charge for liquid damaged computers is $90. For basic hardware repairs (especially for previously discussed screen repairs/replacements, power adapter purchases, battery installations, general Hardware Only replacement services, etc…), neither a Diagnostic/Intake Charge, nor a 30-minute “post-op” Mac Nurse consultation at the time of pick up is required. If you are uncertain whether or not your computer repair concerns require our standard Diagnostic/Intake service, please call us M-F 9am-5pm at 802-472-1727.

Every computer repair is unique, and Mac Nurse will be providing you a written Estimate with an itemized list of all necessary and recommended repairs prior to any work being performed. This typically takes 1-3 days from the date and time of initial drop-off. Thank you for understanding that we are not generally able to offer verbal or written Estimates in advance of a device being dropped off for professional evaluation.
While some repairs and upgrades can be completed with same-day service, the majority of repairs and upgrades are 1-3 days to fully diagnose, and then typically another 24 to 48 hours from a customer’s acceptance of their Estimate to implement and complete most service. If a computer is going to take a longer-than-typical time to complete, this will either be noted at the time of drop off, in your initial Estimate, or discussed when we connect over the phone or over email about your computer’s repairs. If you are feeling antsy about being without your beloved computer for a few days, Mac Nurse can easily make a RENTAL computer available to you. Learn more about rental Macs by clicking HERE.
If your computer is coming in for a Warranty Repair, complimentary loaner Macs are typically available and turnaround time will be as fast as our hands can move!

We like having our weekends to unwind and live a little. Some of the things we do on the weekends include: hiking, mountain biking, playing pickleball, playing tennis, skiing, snowboarding, cutting trees, splitting firewood, gardening, watching movies at home, seeing friends, going out for brunch and dinner, spending time with extended family (and answering their tech support questions), building chicken coops, hanging out with the chickens and other pets (dogs and cats), and other weekendy non-computer-worky stuff!
“No slots available” usually indicates that we are booked up and all of the appointments on the dates/times you’re looking into are filled, or you’re just looking at a date too far into the future. Our online scheduler books out up-to 14 days in advance. Without a doubt, we are very much in business!
In order to provide high quality service and fast turnaround times, we can only schedule in so many appointments on any given day. Mac Nurse is generally a 1-person business running two separate locations. Despite our finite resources, there’s always a chance we might be able to squeeze you in (even when we’re fully booked up) depending on the circumstances your computer is in. Being gentle, patient, and kind towards us greatly increases one’s chances, too.
Best thing to do is try reaching us by phone at 802-472-1727 so we can learn more about your computer’s situation and determine if we can try to either fit you in during the next 2 weeks, schedule an appointment for a date/time beyond the next 2 weeks, or place your name on our wait-list so we can contact you asap when a time slot opens up.

Without these login credentials, we are not able to service your computer. Nearly everything that we are going to diagnose and fix in your computer will require us to log into your Mac using your security credentials. Under normal circumstances, this protects you from having unauthorized people make administrative level changes to your computer. However, to diagnose and professionally repair your computer, we will need administrative-level privileges, and these can only be granted through logging into your computer using your Administrator/User Account password and Apple ID/iCloud account password. Essentially, not providing Mac Nurse with these vital pieces of information would be tantamount to dropping your car off with a mechanic for repair, and then locking the doors and taking your car keys home with you. In a nutshell, we need your keys! ;-) To learn more about our Privacy Policy and about protecting your personal information, see our Privacy Policy details HERE.
Many times throughout the repair process, we will need to access emails sent to you to authenticate a download or install a new piece of software. Having access to your email accounts grants us the ability to streamline the repair process and also adjust the multitude of email account settings to enable all of your email accounts to work seamlessly across all of your devices without worry. Additionally, quite often during Tune-Ups and repairs, various email accounts need to be reconfigured, and sometimes even deleted and then re-entered into your computer to allow them to function properly again. With your login credentials, these aspects can be quickly and easily repaired. This complimentary service is included with your initial Intake/Diagnostic/Tune-Up charge. If you do not wish to volunteer this sensitive information, Mac Nurse will happily consult with you one-on-one to remedy these aspects in real-time at the standard hourly rate. This way, when prompted for your secure passwords, you may enter them yourself. To learn more about our Privacy Policy and about protecting your personal information, see our Privacy Policy details here.

Authoritatively, no. If you place your device in a bag/box/bowl of rice, what this will do is get rice and all of its starchy and sticky bits all over the inside and outside of your device. It will increase the cost of repair since we will have to spend extra time cleaning off rice that is stuck to all of the parts of your computer. If you do have the misfortune of getting your device wet, please see Mac Nurse Tech Tip #16 for best practices to ensure your device can be more affordably repaired and survive such an unfortunate mishap! Be nice, don’t waste rice!

No and no thank you. Apple Authorized repair centers generally move as slowly as the typical bureaucracy that manages them. Apple Stores are notorious for disseminating misinformation about what is or is not repairable, as well as the related costs. Oftentimes, Apple Authorized repair centers and Apple Stores are caught charging upwards of a thousand dollars for repairs that should cost $100! Turnaround times at many Apple Authorized locations are likely 2-3 weeks (as opposed to 2-3 days here at Mac Nurse) and costs will usually be 2x-3x as much as Mac Nurse charges. For in-warranty repairs using your AppleCare or AppleCare+ Warranty, though, they are your best (and only) choice.
